Colombo: From Gateway to Getaway

Colombo receives about 2.36 million arrivals a year and keeps most of them for under 24 hours. It works as a transit stop, not a destination, and the deck sizes that at around $100M a year in missed revenue.

The argument is that the assets already exist and the problem is that nobody has connected them. The proposal runs four pillars at once: turn the city’s waterfronts (Beira Lake, the Galle Face to Fort corridor) into places people use; put heritage buildings back into daily use; formalise the night economy; and make the city legible to independent travellers with maps, an app and unified ticketing. A Colombo Urban Tourism Council coordinates it, with government protecting and the private sector activating. The business case rests on turning 10% of arrivals into 48 to 72 hour stays.
